Research on the homeless problem is challenged by the very nature of homelessness. The populations make up of a heterogeneous group of men and women and children with diferent reason for being without a home and varied personal
resources and needs that are often unique. Most are poor and unemployed, but some are not without job skills, some are homeless as a way of life. Many use shelters, but a significant number shun official crisis shelter. Programs,
preferring instead to live in public places.
